Kourtni
Kourtni (she/her) comes from a small northern community chasing big dreams and big hair. While she is newer to the hair world, starting out at Blanche Macdonald in 2021, she has gained momentum quickly and poured herself into perfecting her craft. Her first love has always been cutting; textured shags & mullets, sharp bobs, ethereal pixies, and long flowing lengths. Kourtni enjoys creating custom coppers, lived-in blondes, and all types of transformative appointments. One of her favourite hair transformations is Permanent Waving; putting her own spin on the classic 80’s perm she customizes perms from bodacious waves to tight coils. On her days off you can find Kourtni bent over a puzzle listening to an audio book or geeking out about the latest films/TV. When she does get dragged out of the house you’ll find her at a concert, DJ set or on the hunt for trinkets and oddities.

Joy
Joy (they/them) (Taurus Sun, Leo Moon, Libra Rising) moved to Vancouver in 2021 to study hair after living on Vancouver Island for most of the last decade. After graduating from Blanche MacDonald's hair program in the spring of 2023, Joy went on to complete our apprenticeship program and has since become a full stylist. Joy loves a textured cut of any shape and style but has a special love for thick curly and wavy hair, and finding the perfect colour, cut, style and schedule to suit you. Joy’s favourite thing is working with you to create the hair (or hairs!) of your dreams, and their goal is to find the sweet spot of comfort and style in every service. When not at the salon, they keep busy with art, music and hunting down unique earrings for their growing collection.

Mariah
Mariah’s (they/she) (taurus sun/aquarius moon/virgo rising) life in hair started circa 2018 when they graduated from MC College in Kelowna. While Mariah is well versed in everything to do with hair, their focus is on intentionally undone haircuts, curls and lived-in colour. They're passionate about creating low-maintenance, effortless styles that feel as good as they look. Mariah loves working with all hair—from curly to straight, blonde to brunette, and everything in between. Whether it’s an edgy alt cut or a soft, natural look, their ultimate goal is to make their clients feel like their most authentic and hottest selves! When Mariah isn’t at the salon you can catch them hunting for vintage goods, making custom jewelry, scouring letterboxd for their next horror watch or yapping about pop culture with pals.

Alyssa
Hi, I’m Alyssa (she/her)! I’ve had my hands in hair since I was 15, and my favourite thing about it is that it's never the same! As a stylist, that means I am always searching for new ways to reflect the ever-changing inside of you - to the outside! I love challenging transformations or simple, natural enhancements. From anything you can think of painted on your shaved head to long feathery-layered cuts. I love it all: short, shaggy, mullets, bobs and cropped hair that looks like it came frolicking out of a forest OR sleek, precise and straight out of a salon. I like to keep things high-maintenance in my chair so that you can go home to low-maintenance hair. My favourite colour is yellow, please let me colour your hair yellow!

Hi, I’m Syd (she/her). I try to have a very personalized and realistic approach to hair. My ultimate goal is to balance your lifestyle, maintenance expectations, and budget while achieving something that speaks to how you wish to present to the world. I adore working with balayage and colour melt techniques, something that keeps getting better as it grows out. I love cutting any fringe, bringing you the shag of your dreams and heavy chopped bobs; always with a focus on low maintenance grow outs of course. When I’m not behind the chair at Big Joy, you can catch me at my other gig, Madlab School of Fitness, where I am a Fitness Coach. Teaching people how to build strength and confidence around their abilities in general, as well as in the gym. It’s a privilege to work so closely with people and to be a part of their journey, whatever that is!

Hi, I'm Joshie (he/him)! (Cancer Sun, Pisces Moon, and Sagittarius Rising) I'm an unapologetically queer sweetie with 17 years of experience as a stylist and educator. I specialize in creating lived-in colors, weirdo haircuts, and effortlessly flowing locks—all to make you look and feel hot. With a focus on technical coloring, precision cutting, and personalized service, I thrive on building trust and delivering transformations of any scale. I’m especially passionate about creating custom blondes and any shade of red your heart desires. My inspiration comes from bold street fashion, 90s club culture, the full spectrum of queer expression, and Y2K hotties. Outside the salon, you’ll probably find me playing with puppies, shopping at every vintage spot in the city, or soaking up the sun at Wreck Beach.

Bailey
Bailey (she/they) started doing hair as a teen, staining the walls of their parents' bathroom with DIY box colour adventures, and forcing haircuts onto their siblings and friends. They decided to take it pro in 2018, and haven't looked back since. In true ADHD fashion, she likes a little bit of everything. Ultra long medieval princesses, dirtbag mullets, scene queens, and Stevie Nicks impersonators – you bring the vibes and she'll bring the execution. As a self-identified lazy girl, they believe that killer hair shouldn't have to be difficult. Bailey loves creating a non-judgmental, cozy space for their clients to explore new looks, and they haaate that one person that one time that told you you'd look weird with bangs. When they're not in the salon, Bailey is usually asking, “Is this still available?” on FB Marketplace.

Hi I'm Shaunn (he/him), (Aries Sun / Cancer Moon / Gemini Rising) I started Big Joy in 2015 to create a space and culture that ran counter to a lot of what I saw in the hair and beauty world. I've been working behind the chair for 19 years and my focus remains on connection, respect, consistency, and service. I design natural, refined cuts and have an individual approach to barbering, hair styling, and customer service. Big Joy is a culmination of all that I love in this industry and a place that I'm proud to call home. When I'm not at the shop, I love to bike, camp, read books, and spend time with my family and friends. At this time I'm currently not accepting new clients.
